Joining Ohr requires being prepared for a mindset shift. Coming from a traditional Malaysian firm, I had to leave behind the old mindset of what I knew about consulting engineering and learn new ways. It is demanding but is also equally rewarding.

At Ohr, our daily work as young engineers is not just limited to structural engineering design, especially working on isolated designs for large projects. We learn to undertake civil engineering design, drawing production, project management and liaison with external parties. I learned that the delivery of projects is not done in departmental silos and isolated skills-based teams. I developed an appreciation for all the aspects involved in the delivery of projects and am developing the skills needed for this alongside my design skills.”

“The projects are predominantly bespoke, and although small-scale, they are architecturally complex, and such complexity is structurally demanding. Working on such projects helped me see that engineering is not a secondary service in the delivery of a building but an essential part of it and, when done right, makes a huge difference to the end product.

I have learned three things at Ohr: design, documentation and drawing. The complex nature of the projects undertaken here has allowed me to appreciate and learn the technical skills required to make structures stand. Documenting calculations and verifying designs are emphasised, good practices seldom employed in Malaysia. At Ohr, engineers draw the key drawings and drawing quality is highly emphasised, from line thickness to the colours used, which builds my appreciation for quality work.”

“There were two things that stood out the most during my time with Ohr.

Firstly, Ohr is a values-led firm. It is common for organisations to have values printed out and placed on office walls, but it is only during challenging times that these values are truly tested. Ohr's director, Yasotha, has led by example on many occasions, showing how the firm's values weren't just words; they were compasses guiding the firm's decisions. This has influenced team members to do the same in their everyday tasks.

Secondly, Ohr is people-centric. The firm cares about team members, not just as engineers. At Ohr, growth is intended to be holistic, as we believe that becoming a better human being in general will help one become a better engineer. Hence, there have always been activities and opportunities for learning, including but not limited to engineering, in the firm. Open discussions and knowledge sharing happened throughout my time with Ohr.

I may have left Ohr, but the skills and personal qualities I have developed, such as attention to detail, critical thinking and values-driven decision-making, will always be my greatest assets in whatever work I may venture into.”
