Reassessing a 1930s cinema for adaptive reuse, balancing preservation of the existing structure with the demands of a new public function.
The proposed adaptive reuse of Odean Cinema, a heritage reinforced-concrete building in Ipoh dating from the 1930s, required an assessment of its structural condition and suitability for use as a community centre with event space. The appraisal considered the building's history, existing construction and the structural implications of introducing a new function.
Working with limited historical information and a building that had undergone several changes over its lifetime, the appraisal combined a visual inspection with a review of existing drawings and previous investigations. This provided a basis for understanding the condition of the structure, identifying matters requiring further investigation and assessing the implications of retaining the existing building.
The engineering considered how the intended use could be accommodated within the existing structure, taking account of occupancy requirements, structural capacity and the opportunities for intervention. The appraisal distinguished between elements that could potentially be retained, matters requiring further verification and improvements that would need to be considered as part of the adaptation.
The findings provided an informed basis for evaluating the feasibility of the proposed reuse, balancing the preservation of the building's historic character with structural performance and the practical requirements of its new function.
