Malaysian Pavilion for Expo Dubai 2020 Design Competition

Dubai Expo 2020

First architectural view, isolated from paired source illustration

A pavilion designed for a second life.

The competition proposal for the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, developed with Eleena Jamil Architect, explored an adaptable and reusable structural system. Rather than designing solely for a temporary exhibition, the pavilion was conceived as a modular structure that could be dismantled, transported and repurposed.

Designing for disassembly and reuse

The superstructure adopts a modular arrangement with repeatable components and demountable connections, allowing the pavilion to be assembled, dismantled and reconfigured. The engineering considered the full life cycle of the structure, integrating fabrication, transportation and future reuse into the original design concept.

Giving the structure a second life

Following the exhibition, the structural modules were intended for reuse as a permanent building or reconfigured into single-storey humanitarian accommodation. By designing for adaptability and material recovery from the outset, the proposal explored how temporary architecture could retain its value beyond its original purpose.
