Kampung Pasir Bridge

Klang River, Kuala Lumpur

Proposed suspended pedestrian crossing beneath the existing road bridge

Making room for a new crossing beneath an existing bridge.

Kampung Pasir Bridge proposes a pedestrian and cyclist connection across the Klang River, using the space beneath an existing road bridge. Developed with Linear Vista, Commute Initiatives and Klang River Festival, the proposal forms part of a wider effort to connect communities with the river and improve routes for walking and cycling.

The structural concept suspends a lightweight crossing from the existing bridge girders. A modular arrangement using readily available steel components seeks to make fabrication and installation straightforward, keeping the engineering proportionate to an economical community connection.

Finding a new use for existing infrastructure

The concept uses the road bridge above as the supporting structure for a separate crossing below. Suspended modules establish a route across the river, with the connection to the existing girders forming the key structural interface.

Building the crossing from repeatable modules

The modular concept explores reinforcing-bar hangers, metal grating and lightweight steel framing as options. Scaffold tubes and hollow sections are considered as alternatives, with material selection informed by availability, fabrication and assembly.

Considering assembly from the outset

The sketch develops hooked hangers that can be rotated into position at the girder flange, with adjoining modules clamped together. These details make the method of assembling and supporting the crossing part of the structural concept.
