Making a complex sculpture buildable without losing its slender form.
The sculpture garden at the Four Seasons Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, developed with Inchscape, features a helix that twists in both plan and elevation. The structural engineering sought to preserve the slender sculptural form while resolving the challenges of fabrication, assembly and the limited load-bearing capacity of the existing basement roof.
The complex three-dimensional geometry was rationalised into a structural frame that could be fabricated and assembled without compromising the intended slender appearance. The design integrated member arrangements and connection detailing with the sculptural geometry, balancing structural performance with architectural expression.
Located above an existing basement, the sculpture required a lightweight structural solution to limit additional loads on the supporting roof. The engineering considered the structural arrangement and load distribution to accommodate the installation within the available capacity.
