Moganshan Town · Fuxi River Seven Bridges Conceptual Design International Competition

Moganshan Town, Deqing County, Zhejiang, China

Exploring pedestrian bridge concepts where structural behaviour and architectural expression are developed together.

Developed with Formzero, four pedestrian bridge concepts explored different ways of crossing the Fuxi River in Moganshan Town, Deqing County, Zhejiang, China. The 2022–2023 international competition sought proposals for seven crossings that would strengthen waterfront routes and public spaces. The Horizon Bridge, the single-plane proposal, was selected for the competition’s Top 30 shortlist.

Testing the structural possibilities

The four entries investigated contrasting bridge geometries, from a single-plane crossing to perforated, interlocking and folded forms. The structural studies provided an engineering basis for examining the behaviour of each proposed arrangement and the implications of its geometry.

Engineering as part of the design process

Three-dimensional structural modelling and analysis supported the evaluation of the four concepts. The work brought engineering assessment into the architectural exploration, considering how the proposed forms could carry loads and maintain the intended design expression.
